Kopi O by Danielle Solk

Cardboard, Starbucks bags, and acrylic paint
Singapore, Singapore

Inspiration

In the height of Singapore’s strict COVID-19 lockdown, Danielle Solk found herself surrounded by delivery packaging—remnants of a time when the outside world arrived only at the doorstep. As both a fervent recycler and thoughtful observer of everyday life, she began to incorporate these materials into her art.

Kopi O is a meditation on contrast: the traditional Southeast Asian coffee order meets the branding of a global coffee conglomerate, Starbucks. Painted on recycled packaging, the work celebrates the cultural icons of Singapore and Malaysia while reflecting on modern convenience, consumption, and heritage. It’s a love letter to a region’s coffee tradition, seen through the eyes of a foreigner who has come to cherish its contradictions.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Danielle Solk is a mixed media artist, photographer, and educator based in Singapore. Her work often blurs the lines between art and documentation, using layered techniques and found materials to reflect the textures of daily life. With a fearless spirit of experimentation, Danielle allows her chosen medium to shape the direction of her message.

Originally from the UK, she brings an outsider’s lens to the cultures of Southeast Asia—curious, respectful, and full of admiration for the region’s customs and contradictions. Her art is as much about seeing as it is about making: elevating the mundane into visual commentary on time, place, and identity.

Go-to Coffee Order: Kopi O or Iced Oat Latte
Coffee Sanctuary: No favorite—Danielle finds inspiration in many cafés across Singapore.
