Early Mornings and Late Afternoons

Payton Brown

Oil on canvas

Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, USA

My mother who, when I’m staying with my family, typically asks me before bed, “Want me to wake you up at 4:30 for coffee?” She is totally an early riser. She drinks coffee all throughout the day, and she is often still sipping on a cup at 4:30 in the afternoon.

This inspired the title, Early Mornings and Late Afternoons, because whether it is around 4:30 AM or PM, my mom will likely be seated at our kitchen table, sipping away. The two mugs represent the two of us, and the many moments we have shared at the table—laughing, talking, gossiping, reminiscing.

She currently teaches art courses as an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, and West Virginia University.

Her work centers around nostalgia, tradition, and human connection, often depicted through shared moments involving food and drink. Though she primarily works in oil painting, she also enjoys mixed-media, colored pencil, oil pastel, linocut printmaking, and digital illustration.

Go-to coffee order: Iced decaf coffee with lots of sugar and flavors—caramel, vanilla, cake batter—anything sweet!

Coffee sanctuary: The Dunkin’ near my apartment, but I also really love Blue Moose Cafe inn.
