Can I Be Served by Dr. Orin Carpenter

Medium: Mixed Media

A layered reflection on history, resilience, and the right to coffee

Inspiration

Can I Be Served pays homage to the 1960 Woolworth sit-ins, a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. The artwork reminds us that something as simple as ordering a cup of coffee was once denied to many because of segregation. Orin Carpenter’s piece challenges viewers to reflect on progress, equity, and shared humanity while celebrating the freedom to enjoy coffee together today.
